THE BEST SHINTY VENUE IN SCOTLAND?

With the new sports pitch at Strachur set to host the AJG Parcels Celtic Society Cup Final this weekend, why not come along and see the new facilities?

The day's events start on Saturday June 23 with the under-17 McQuiston Cup Final at 1pm, followed by the big final starting at 4.05pm between Inveraray and Taynuilt.

If you can't get there, have a wee look on BBC Alba during live coverage of the final.

The new community sports pitch in the Cowal village of Strachur hosted its first-ever senior sporting event on Saturday April 7. Some say it is just about the best venue for shinty in Argyll, and perhaps even the whole of Scotland.

Set in a stunning location in the Cowal hills, the pitch and state-of-the-art pavilion were constructed through the efforts of the Strachur and District Community Development Company, and have been ten years in the planning.

You can get a glimpse of the pitch and pavilion by going to our YouTube channel  - just click on the link on the right hand side of the page.

  1. Don't agree. We went to the game at the weekend and after asking for directions from a local he complained about the state of the drainage job done on the pitch.

During the game this became apparent that the far left corner was boggy even with very little rain over the last few days.

Once this has been fixed, which could be a big job, then I would be more in agreement with your comments.

  2. Quite agree that it is not quite there yet.

But I walked across the pitch after the game and there is an area on the right hand corner (looking from the entrance) that has been worked on over the winter. I was impressed, as it was as dry as the rest of the pitch - but because it still hadn't fully healed and the lines of works were visible, it maybe gave the impression of being wet.

Perhaps we need to give it a month or two until grass growth gets properly going.

The comment of most I speak to is that it will be a brilliant major final venue very shortly.

From experience, the chat of locals - who no doubt have been merrily criticising from the sidelines while others have been getting on with the work - is not always the most reliable of information sources.

  3. An excellent venue. The standard of the surface has a bit to go. If Kyles had allowed Strachur to cut the grass then I could give you a better judgement but I'd say there's a wee bit to go before it would be suitable for a final
