Lochaber lifting the cup

Shintyfan has posted footage from the Women's Camanachd Association finals day at Strachur on September 8, 2012.

Lochaber won the Marine Harvest Challenge Trophy (the second division competition) after a great final versus Strathglass - the final score being 5-4.

The video, which can be found here or by going to the YouTube panel to the right hand side of this page, was taken by Willie Montgomery of Strachur - and thanks to him for allowing its use. A few action photos have been inserted (clumsily) by Shintyfan into the video coverage, just to give a flavour of the match.

Lochaber Lift Marine Harvest Challenge Cup 2012

After a hugely exciting match that almost went to extra time, it was Lochaber Ladies who lifted the 2012 Marine Harvest Challenge Cup in Strachur on Saturday September 8th.  In their first ever Cup Final, Lochaber saw off formidable and experienced Challenge Cup finalists Strathglass with both teams demonstrating excellent skills in front of a sizeable crowd.
The match opened brightly with play flowing from end to end, but it was Strathglass who were first to score when full forward Hazel Hunter outran her marker and slipped the ball past the Lochaber Goalkeeper.  It was not long however before the scores were equalised when Lochaber’s Kirsty MacDonald put a powerful shot past the Strath Keeper.
Whilst Lochaber did well to hold onto the majority of possession, the speed of the Strathglass forwards consistently caused problems for the Lochaber defence when they managed to make a break.  It was indeed Strathglass who secured the next 2 goals through Laura Fraser and a second for Hazel Hunter.
With Strathglass leading 3-1 the pressure was on Lochaber to pull a goal back and put themselves back in contention for the Cup, and they did just that with a goal from Laura MacIntyre followed by an impressive volley from Missy Cameron.  The score did not remain at 4-3 for long as Strathglass found the back of the net once more and Hazel Hunter secured a hat trick.  However Lochaber were not content to allow Strathglass to take the lead into half time and Kirsty MacDonald equalised the scores at 4-4 just before the whistle blew.
Both teams came out strongly into the second half but Lochaber once more dominated the possession.  Despite this the scores remained even until ten minutes from time when Lochaber forward Rebecca Stafford broke away from the Strathglass defence and slipped the ball past the keeper putting Lochaber 5-4 ahead. It was a tense final ten minutes for everyone with only one goal separating the teams. However Strathglass did not manage to grab a late equaliser and the final score remained at 5-4 with Lochaber lifting the 2012 Marine Harvest Challenge Cup in front of a very excited travelling support.
Lochaber Captain Christy MacIntyre was presented the Marine Harvest Challenge Cup and Missy Cameron was awarded Player of the Match sealing a very successful day for the club.  The WCA would like to congratulate Lochaber on their victory and both teams for providing a nail biting and high quality display of women’s shinty.  Thanks also goes to Robert Baxter for refereeing, Strachur for providing excellent facilities and once again to Marine Harvest for their continued support of women’s shinty.
