The Women’s Camanachd Association has announced the 2011 players of the year as voted by their fellow players in
the women’s game.
The winners from each division of women’s shinty - along with a few words
from the respective clubs - are as follows:
Marine Harvest National Division 1 - Laura Gallacher, Glengarry.
"Glengarry Girls Shinty Club thanks the clubs who voted for Laura. In her four years with Glengarry Girls, Laura has developed into a key player in our team. As a team we fully recognise Laura’s talents
and we are delighted for her to win this award and that her shinty peers
recognise the talents she brings to the women’s game. Laura’s fine
season with Glengarry, winning the league and cup double was topped off
with her first international cap, where she turned in a star performance
with her goals, leading the Scots to victory. At only 16 Laura has a
bright future ahead of her in Women’s shinty and will be no stranger to
further plaudits and awards."
Marine Harvest North Division 2 - Lorna MacRae, Skye Camanachd Ladies
"Skye Camanachd Ladies picked Lorna MacRae as the WCA player of the
year nominee as she is a very dedicated and skilful young player, a
brilliant forward and top goal scorer for the team. Lorna, in 2011, was
picked to captain the north of scotland under-18 team, and was also
named as a reserve for the Scotland women’s team. She was also named
Skye Camanachd Ladies Player of the Year. We would like to wish Lorna
all the best for this season and hope her success continues."
Marine Harvest South Division 2 - Jo Kelly, Cowal and Bute
"Jo puts her heart and soul into every game that she plays, fights
for every ball and seems to be everywhere on the pitch. She proves
herself time and time again with her commitment to the team and her
fitness and drive.
Jo plays a big part in our team and we wanted to
give her recognition for this."
The WCA would like to congratulate all three players on their awards and
outstanding performances during the 2011 season.
